Learning French Language
Sometimes it can be crazy to figure out what resources you’d need to be able to get started in learning a new language. It seems scary, but exciting at the same time. What’s great with the internet is that you can find resources very quickly but considering the plethora of resources out there, which one would you pick? Here are a couple of recommendations that we have at the Music and Language Learning Center to help you support your journey.
  1. Duolingo is a free language-learning platform that includes a language-learning website and app, as well as a digital language proficiency assessment exam. It offers a gamified experience for learning French and other languages, with lessons in vocabulary, grammar, and conversation.
  2. Babbel is a subscription-based language-learning platform that offers interactive, immersive lessons in French and other languages. It includes lessons in vocabulary, grammar, and conversation, as well as cultural information and real-life situations.
  3. Rosetta Stone is a well-known language-learning platform that offers interactive lessons in French and other languages. It uses a unique immersive approach to language learning, without the use of translations or explanations in the user's native language.
  4. FrenchPod101 is a subscription-based language-learning platform that offers interactive lessons and resources for learning French. This learning resource provides a range of materials and activities including lessons in vocabulary, grammar, and conversation, as well as cultural information and real-life situations, to help learners improve their skills and knowledge of the language.
  5. French Together is a comprehensive course for learning French, designed for beginner to intermediate learners. It includes lessons in vocabulary, grammar, and conversation, as well as cultural information and real-life situations.
  6. French in Action is a comprehensive course for learning French, developed by Yale University. It includes 52 half-hour lessons in video format, as well as a textbook and online resources.
  7. French Language Tutorial is a free online resource for learning French, developed by the University of Texas at Austin. It includes lessons in vocabulary, grammar, and conversation, as well as cultural information and real-life situations.
  8. French Today is a language-learning platform that provides a range of interactive resources to help learners master the French language. Through this platform, users can access lessons focused on vocabulary, grammar, and conversation, as well as cultural information and real-life scenarios. In order to access these resources, users must subscribe to the platform.
  9. French Learner is a free online resource for learning French, developed by the University of Victoria. This resource offers a variety of lessons covering vocabulary, grammar, and conversation, as well as cultural information and real-life scenarios, to help learners develop a comprehensive understanding of the language.
  10. French Games is a free online resource for learning French, developed by the University of Victoria. It includes a variety of games and activities for learning French vocabulary and grammar.

Online resources can be a useful supplement for learning French, but they are not a replacement for human interaction and personalized instruction. While online resources can provide a structure for learning and offer a range of materials and activities, they cannot provide the same level of individualized feedback and guidance as a human instructor.

Having the opportunity to practice speaking and listening with a native speaker or a trained French instructor can help learners improve their pronunciation, build confidence in their communication skills, and receive immediate feedback on their progress. It can also provide an opportunity for learners to ask questions and clarify any points of confusion.

In addition, learning a language is about more than just acquiring knowledge and skills. It is also about developing an understanding and appreciation for the culture and people who speak the language. Learning French through human interaction and immersion in a French-speaking environment can provide a deeper understanding of the language and culture.

Overall, while online resources can be a valuable tool for learning French, they should be used in conjunction with other methods of language learning, such as classroom instruction or immersion experiences, in order to achieve the best results.
