Perla is a Texas certified teacher with extensive experience teaching many content areas, including preschool and kindergarten, middle school, and high school. She holds a B.S.Ed. from the University of Texas at Austin with a concentration in Spanish and French. She later pursued a Certificat de Langue et Civilization from La Sorbonne in Paris, France. She continued furthering her education by obtaining an M.S. Ed from Framingham State University and recently completed an M.S in Health Coaching and Applied Nutrition, her second passion in life. Perla grew up and went to school in Mexico, learning all about this beautiful culture and sharing this enthusiasm and appreciation for cultures with her students.
Her love for languages developed when she was in Middle School, taking her first French lesson, and knew she wanted to speak and learn more about French culture. As a result, most of her professional experience has been teaching culturally diverse students of all grade levels ranging from preschool to high school. Perla taught in exciting places like Mexico, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia and loved working with diverse students. Perla is a life-long learner and has kept abreast with best teaching practices by being a member of and invited to present workshops at the AATSP(American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese). She has also attended several Carla conferences in second language acquisition learning in the summers to adapt her teaching practice. In addition, she is a member of and presenter at NESA conferences in the Near East South East Asia region. Her presentations have been in brain-based learning and Differentiated Instruction for diverse language learners.
She believes students learn the best when they feel safe to take risks in the target language. She engages her students by being supportive and empathetic in their learning journey while having fun in the classroom. Perla firmly believes that building ongoing rapport and genuine connections with her students is as important as the lesson's content.
Her teaching mantra is a quote from Ann Lieberman: "Great teachers empathize with kids, respect them, and believe that each one has something special that can be built upon."
When I am not teaching, I enjoy trying out a new recipe or spending time with my family and friends. I also enjoy walking with my dog and practicing mindfulness.
So come as you are and be open to embracing your greatest potential in learning a new language!
