Why Music Appreciation is Important

Music Appreciation
Music is everywhere, from grocery stores to our homes. However, we often only hear music without actively listening to it. Even when we are listening, many people have a set of music genres and artists they tend to exclusively gravitate toward as a result of personal preferences, limited exposure, or education. Sometimes people can fall into musical ruts, limiting their exploration of music and all the rich cultures connected to it.
How often do we reflect on the music we experience each day? Music appreciation is very important because there are a variety of benefits, including increased emotional intelligence, cultural understanding, and cognitive enrichment. Here are some ways that you can develop an appreciation for music.

Explore Different Musical Genres

This is probably one of the easiest ways to start appreciating music, especially in a world with so many streaming services, making music more accessible than ever. You can start by taking suggestions from a variety of people of all ages and backgrounds, which can help you discover new genres and musical time periods.

Even listening to music you usually wouldn't listen to can help you develop an appreciation for different kinds of music. When you listen across genres throughout history, it becomes clear how music builds on itself, which can also deepen one's appreciation for the art. Exploring music in this way can also deepen your understanding of the world and its cultures.

Study the History of Music

Studying music history deepens our understanding of music across all time periods. While this may sound like a daunting goal, starting in small increments makes it very manageable. Music is heavily influenced by the state of the world at the time. By discovering music chronologically, you can see how societies have progressed through sound and trace the innovations artists contributed over time. Studying music history provides valuable context and helps explain how music both reflects and shapes culture.

Learn the Elements of Music

To be able to appreciate music on a deeper level, it helps to develop a basic understanding of music theory. When you can recognize how musical elements work together, you gain greater respect for the artistic choices composers and performers take.

Key elements to become familiar with include tempo, pitch, rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, timbre, and dynamics. Learning these concepts may seem intimidating, especially if you have no prior musical experience, but many of them, like dynamics (volume) and tempo (speed) are things you've likely noticed naturally without realizing it.

Consider Musical Form

Understanding musical form can further enhance your appreciation of music. Musical form refers to the overall structure of a piece. In traditional classical music, sections are often labeled "A" and "B", where the A section introduces the main material and the B section presents contrasting ideas. Because many musical forms follow recognizable patterns, noticing when an artist breaks from them can deepen your appreciation. It can also help you recognize artistic statements and intentions within the music.

Be Intentional

One of the most important parts of music appreciation is being intentional with your listening. Listening without focus limits how much you gain from the experience. Be intentional about what you listen to, how you listen, and even where and with whom you listen.

Keep at It

Remember that developing an appreciation for music is complex and can be challenging, so if you feel frustrated or overwhelmed, that's perfectly normal. If you or your learner would benefit from more structure, we offer music appreciation courses designed to guide and support this journey.

If you are interested in exploring a broader range of topics, such as music theory or instrumental study, please feel free to contact us at the Music & Language Learning Center. We would be happy to offer you a free consultation to explore how we can help you!
