Why Learning Spanish Opens Doors to New Cultures

Language is the conduit to all human communication and is one of the most important things one can study in their lifetime, whether it's to gain a deeper understanding of their mother tongue or to explore a variety of languages from all over the world. Language has so much power—from the way we perceive things to the very basic urge to be understood. Studying Spanish can be especially effective in opening doors to new cultures, and here's how:
1. Spanish is spoken by a lot of people.

This one is pretty obvious, but it's important to remember that around 500 million people speak Spanish. There are 21 Spanish-speaking countries across the globe with complex and diverse cultures.
Being able to speak their language will give you a deeper, immersive experience and allow you to more fully participate in their culture. Speaking Spanish will allow native people to share their culture with you in the same way it was introduced to them, which is one of the most beautiful experiences life has to offer.

2. Spanish offers new perspectives.

While languages can be translated into one another, we cannot always represent the exact meanings of one language in another. There are words and expressions we have absolutely no equivalent for in English, and vice versa.

Understanding those words brings a very different perspective because it’s much easier to articulate a cultural ideal in the language of that culture.

For example, according to research published by the National Institute of Health, Mexican culture celebrates death. In a lot of Eurocentric cultures, death is not discussed because many people are uncomfortable with it. This cultural disconnect is hard to describe in just one language, and it's more telling to see how Mexican people speak about it in their language to get a full idea of their beliefs.

3. Spanish is the official language of 21 countries

Spanish is a language spoken globally. There is not one singular country where Spanish will be useful or even one singular continent where it will be useful. It is one of the most versatile languages that opens you up to at least 21 different cultures, let alone the subcultures within each country.

4. Spanish is a Romance language

Romance languages are languages that come from Vulgar Latin. If you see similarities between Spanish and English, like cognates or root words, it's because they have the same origin.

Those similarities extend throughout the rest of the Romance languages. This makes those languages easier to learn, and you can connect better with the cultures behind them.

5. Spanish can offer you more opportunities in your own country

Being bilingual is a very valuable skill that can open more employment opportunities for you and even get you paid more. From diners to investment bankers, being able to communicate with more people will only help you.

Remind yourself that the culture across neighborhoods can be centered in the languages they use, so give yourself a chance to be included in it. Others will appreciate that effort.

All of these ways Spanish can help you connect with others are very important, not just your educational growth, but also your personal growth. Learning languages allows you to explore the world more fully.
